Pope Leo XIV: The elderly are “the wisdom of a people”
Pope Leo XIV today (November 28, 2025) paid a heartfelt visit to the Little Sisters of the Poor care home on the outskirts of Istanbul, a haven that welcomes e

lderly people of many backgrounds, including Turks, Armenians, African refugees, and members of the Jewish community. Inspired by the words on the corridor wall, “The Other is Christ,” the Holy Father recognised each resident as a person who carries the dignity and presence of Christ.
The visit began in the chapel, decorated with flowers and flags, where nearly two hundred residents and staff gathered to greet him. A women’s choir of immigrants from several African countries sang Ave Maria and Laudate Dominum, setting a serene and prayerful atmosphere. After greeting residents and praying before the Blessed Sacrament, the Pope listened to Sister Margaret Searson, who expressed the community’s joy and said his visit reminded the elderly that God loves them deeply.
Pope Leo XIV thanked the Little Sisters for their compassionate service, emphasising that their mission is not only to care for the poor but to live as their sisters, sharing daily life with them in true Christian fraternity. Speaking directly to the residents, he highlighted the Church’s conviction that the elderly are “the wisdom of a people,” a precious gift for families, grandchildren, and society—especially in a world that often overlooks the meaning and value of old age.
He concluded the encounter by praying with the community and imparting his Apostolic Blessing. Before departing, he warmly greeted residents and staff along the corridors and signed the guest book with the message:
“I warmly bless this home and its residents, especially the Little Sisters of the Poor for their service and witness.
