Lyimo Appointed First Bishop of the Diocese of Bariadi

The Holy Father Pope Leo XIV has today, January 2026, appointed Prosper Baltazar Lyimo, formerly Auxiliary Bishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Arusha, as the first Bishop and founding Ordinary of the newly established Diocese of Bariadi.
The announcement was made by the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC). According to the statement, His Lordship Bishop-Elect Prosper Baltazar Lyimo was born on 20 August 1964. Following his priestly formation, he was ordained to the Sacred Order of the Priesthood on 4 July 1997 in the Archdiocese of Arusha, where he has served in various pastoral and administrative assignments.
Prior to this appointment, Bishop-Elect Lyimo had served as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Arusha since 2015.
The Bishop-Elect holds a Doctorate in Canon Law.
